ETL: How to plan for pre- and post-deployment phases

Pre-Deployment: Develop and execute an ETL deployment plan.

The deployment plan occurs when the ETL team is ready to proceed with an organized deployment. In this step, the team lead submits a step-by-step, start-to-finish plan to perform the migration, including dependencies.
Creating this document should be relatively simple if you have the Data Migration Process Flow Design document already, which should contain sections marked “Order of Operations” and “Deployment” that serve this
purpose. Of course, in that document, only the integration itself is described. In the plan, the entire process from start to finish should be documented, not just those related to the migration portion (hence the emphasis above on “including dependencies”).

  • For the internal team, this deliverable requires an agreed-upon strategy of deployment order among each team member and, if properly aligned, will result in a smooth delivery process in which team members confidently communicate each step to the others and subsequently provide signoff once complete or, if any unexpected issues occur, will enable them to revise or roll back.
